The History of Yamaha® Powersports 

Yamaha is one of the powersports industry’s biggest companies and is consistently one of the top-selling brands each year. So how did they get to be the juggernaut they are? Brush up on some of your Yamaha history and then stop by Engelhart Motorsports Company in Madison, Wisconsin.
 

Early Years


The beginnings of the Yamaha Corporation actually date all the way back to 1887, when Torakusu Yamaha first opened a musical instruments manufacturing company. Their very first products didn’t have engines and gears, but rather strings and keys. If you look at their logo, you can even see the pronged devices, known as tuning forks, as they continue to make a wider variety of instruments to this day.

After the Second World War, like many Japanese companies, Yamaha was looking to diversify their products and turned to motorcycles. Eventually, in 1955, they established Yamaha Motor Company as a separate entity from the larger company. With the invention of the four-stroke engine in 1968, production became faster, and demand for Yamaha products skyrocketed.
 

1980s Expansion


By the 1980s, the company was looking to expand once again, this time into other areas of powersports vehicles, like all-terrain vehicles and personal watercraft markets. They quickly became a pioneer in the PWC industry, with their WaveRunner® 500 becoming one of the most influential models early on. And, of course, they continued to dominate the powersports market overall as their product lines continued to expand and improve.
 

Modern Changes


Yamaha’s success and dedication carries on into the new millennium. Their products are commonly used in professional races and each new model year brings innovative developments that reshape each product, not just for Yamaha, but for other companies as well.
